July 2020 marks the 25th year of my conversion to polytheism. I left Christianity when I was 12 years old, after the death of my maternal grandparents.
My parents weren’t religious or anything. I was. Early on I know monotheism wasn’t my thing. I searched and stumbled on Hellenic polytheism when I was watching the show Hercules The Legendary journeys. I didn’t believe in the Gods after watching the show. That started when I started reading Gustav Schwab Greek Myths in Dutch and I felt a connection, that still is present today. Over the years I looked into other polytheistic faiths, but none felt as good to me as with Hellenic polytheism.
What spoke to me were the stories, that they were so different from christianity. After I started studying the religion, I discovered that the ancient Greeks held different views on their Gods that is different from the myths. They revered their Gods. They thought that they were part of nature instead of being the pinnacle of creation.
I must confess that even though I’m not a truly active worshipper, I do pray to the Gods and thanked them for being in my life and helped me through some dark times during me teenage years and during adulthood.
I’m really grateful for Aidoneos(Haides) and Hekate in helping and guiding me. I wouldn’t know what I would do of be without their help.
I thank Zeus for giving me a sense of direction and sense for justice, which isn’t easy in today’s world where there is so much injustice to deal with. He has shown me that its better to act just full and according to your beliefs, even if it meant to stand alone.
