This is my blog where I write stuff that interest me: religion, politics etc…

Learning Russian

In a earlier post, I mentioned that I was learning Russian and explained how that came to be. After doing that for four years in a row, I want to share my experiences with it.

Everyone makes novice mistakes. I’m no exception to it. When I tried to learn new words, I thought first of the Dutch word and translated that into Russian, while I should do the opposite. When thinking of lets say a bike, I should not think hey: a bike and than translate it into Russian. Rather, my teacher thought me that its best to when you see something that you know the Russian word for it, say it directly in Russian instead of first in Dutch and than into Russian. It will help make the connection faster and it will last longer in your memory.
Like I said earlier, its a beautiful language. I must admit that some Russian women who speak their native tongue sound incredibly sexy. i know one Russian woman who speaks Dutch in a accent that makes her so sexy.
Anyway. I digress. Learning this language isn’t easy. It has all these rules and 6 cases, where one sentence can at times contain three different cases, as each case has their place in the sentence depending on what it is used for. Some of them you have to know by heart, but most of the time, you have to learn it through practice.
Everything in Russian changes depending on the case its used for. The plural for a word can change, or at least the ending of it can change depending the case it is used in.
Because its a phonetic language, the intonation is SO important. It can change the context of a sentence completly.
I didn’t know that languages are put into categories depending on their level of difficulty. It should be noted that Russian is level 3, while I know a certain someone who is learning Korean that its a level 4.
While learning another language is great to help your brain to stay active. Its not enough to go to a class once a week, do the tasks and be done with it. There are those who learn languages easy. I’m not one of them. I have to put in alot of work to get where I’m today. I’m proud of where I am today, simply because I made the effort. Im passionate about learning the language. Even though July was a break from it, I will start it up again in August.
Its like running a marathon. You can’t force it. you have to train for it, work for it, but don’t overdo it. You can use apps to help you, but online apps can’t be the only thing you use for learning a new language. You need a teacher to help you out. There are some nuances that only a teacher can teach you, that you will most likely not pick up online or in a book. Even with the pronounciation of the words, letters, a teacher can help you out there to make sure you say it correctly.
I never thought I would be so passionate about learning a new language but I did.
