Ok. Now I’m going to do something that I normally wouldn’t do. Talk about k-pop. Specifically about BTS. I know two wonderful people who are real fans of this band.
– I’m not a fan of Korean language. It doesnt have the same ring to it like Greek, Latin, Russian, English or even French. It doesnt really appeal to me.
But I can enjoy their movies. Listening to BTS is a different experience for me. I have to read the translated lyrics for me to understand what they are sing about.
– Still, it seems that BTS is one of THE most popular k-pop bands in the world. Their success can be explained by couple of reasons.
– But the most important one in my opinion is that they want to convey a positive message to the people. This could explain their transition from Korean to English, to broaden their fan base.
Especially in these times, the world could use that kind of positivity.
– Second the topics they sing about is different from other bands. While many K-pop songs are about relationships and love, BTS cover subjects that other bands may not like bullying, elitism and mental health. Their song Whalien is about being lonely.Suga stands out from the group because he spoke about his mental health issues and being a rapper and all, it doesn’t make it any easier. But he is really good.
His songs, his image, how he carries himself is different from what I see in American rappers. I think I can compare him with Russian rapper Max Korzh, who also raps on various themes and uses different styles in his music.
I’m no army, but I do appreciate what they want to do. For that I respect them, that they talk about sensitive topics that most would ignore. Especially in pop culture songs.
