A former co-worker who is a fan of Korean tv drama and music was watching this show and recommended me to watch it. Its a urban fantasy show with romance and horror elements added to it.
t\”s best to use subtitles for this show. I don\”t mind watching foreign tv shows or movies. I recently watched the excellent Russian tv show “To The Lake”, I have watched Scandinavian, Japanese movies and even a few Korean movies now. Hell, i even use subtitles for American and British movies.
To be honest, I have a hard time remembering the names of the characters, but nonetheles i was captivated by this show.
But from episode 1, I was sold to the premise. The premise is rather simple. A woman Nam Ji Ah, I think, who works for a tv station, had a run in with the supernatural in her childhood and she is looking for another run in. She meets Lee Yeon, the Nine-Tailed Fox. Throughout the show there is alot of mythology that you are supposed to know, but at the same time, you can enjoy the show even without the knowledge of Korean mythology.
The show was beautifully filmed. The sets are beautiful. The acting is top notch. The music is decent and excellent for the show. Even though I’m a huge fan of film music, I don\”t remember much of the music except for the opening song which was beautiful and almost angelic. The rest don\”t really seem to stand out, in my opinion.
The supporting characters were also great. You see that they were fleshed out from the beginning, which is refreshing to see. Most supporting characters in these type of shows are rarely fleshed out.
what’s interesting about Korean tv is that the way they make tv is different from in the west. They don’t use the same formule for tv series. Their twists are unexpected. Their drama is different. Than again their culture is so different from ours, that it shouldn’t come as a surprise that their movies and tv series are different.
Update. I have watched all 8 episodes and i really loved it. Its different, it has a mix of various genres. It makes sense that Yeon would fall in love with Ji Ah Nam, because she resembles his past lover and he has been waiting for her to be reborn: body and mind.
I’m curious to see what the rest of the season will look like,, but the ending of episode 7: wow. Its was emotional and a bit shocking to see. You can clearly see they are building to something, especially with that kid that seems to grow really fast.
If you are into urban fantasy with horror and romance added to it, this might be your thing.
Transmigration of the soul is something that can be found in most cultures around the world. It isn’t purely a Asian thing. Even the ancient Greeks knew about it. Even the Romans when the story of Aeneas’ travels lead him to the Underworld and the inner workings of the Underworld is revealed where souls who drink from the river, would reborn and forgot their past lives.
Going back to episode 8. It had alot of creepy elements to it, like the Imoogi being part of Ji Ah and even though it was a recording of years before the show takes place, the reincarnated Imoogi/ former lover of Yeon( forgot her name) could read the sign that is hanging in the office where Ji Ah was watching the tape.
The Rang character can be annoying like a spoiled brat who wants to ruin something you like just because they didn’ get what they wanted. In the scenes where Yeon was talking to a young Ran, i first thought he was talking with a girl before I realized, he was talking to his younger halfbrother.
What i like about this show among other things is that they show the supernatural world that is no different from ours, that they intertwine with our world, even though theirs is so different.
This is not the first show to do this. I think it is the first show to make it work.
Tomorrow the new episode will be released. I look forward to episode 9. Episode 8 ended on a cliffhanger. The brothers fighting the grudges and Ji Ah is to fend for her self and relive her nightmare of losing her parents all over again, while Rang had to relive his nightmare where he was abandoned by his human mother and attacked by two grudges before Yeon came in and saved him.
I wonder. will Ji Ah Trust Yeon again? Will the brother make amends and put aside their differences in the fight against the Imoogi? What is the connection between Yeon and the Imoogi?
I hope we get answers to these questions before the season is over.
