review of The Empty Man

I’m not going to add the (spoiler alert) to this post. Why, because this movie is really bad. Its similar to the horrible movies Slender Man, The Bye Bye Man, , The Ring, Candyman. The only difference is that Candyman is the best one of the five. They all deal with similar theme where a supernatural entity haunts people.

I do admire that they tried to do it differently, but they missed the mark. At one point, they seem to forgot the premise of the movie, a entity that haunts. The intro is way to long. The intro takes about 20 plus minutes. Than we go to America where we follow a ex cop who is investigating the disapearance of a teenager. This cop ends up uncovering a doomsday cult. related to Empty Man. And there they seem to forget the original premise where a supernatural entity hunts down people after three days.

Normally a film like this shouldn’t be any longer than 90 minutes, but this film lasts around 2 hours 17 minutes. I don’t mind slow burn psychological horror films, but this movie is nothing like that. It’s not even scary.

The ending is every weirder and makes no sense whatsoever. The plot twists are not earned at all.

I was curious to see it, but even the trailer is is short. At around 90 seconds, a trailer is shorter than usual. A normal trailer is around 150 seconds. Add that that this was mismarketed as a creature feature and we don’t even get to see it, except for the end. Last year I saw Countdown in the theatres, but there it was earned when they showed the creature. Throughout the movie “Countdown” it centred around investigating the creature and they did investigated it. Here they sidelined it.

I was annoyed throughout the movie. I wasn’t entertained, scared at all. This movie tried to deliver a philosophical message about mind over body. Nrmally I would welcome this kind of take on a horror movie, but it doesn’t work. The payoff is not earned.

All in all, i wouldn’t recommend this movie at all. Its two hours wasted, really.
