Wonder Woman 1984 (spoiler warning)

This movie is a follow up to the Wonder Woman, and again directed by Patty Jenkins and both Chris Pine and Gal Gadot return. The sequel is a great movie. Kirsten Wigg and Pedro Pascal are there and play the movie villains.

The plot follows Wonder Woman throughout the 80\”s and Kirsten Wigg\” Barbara Minerva discover a rock that grants wishes. Barbara wishes to be like Diana and Maxwell (Pedro Pascal) wants to expand his empire. The themes here seem to be be carefull what you wish you and don\”t take shortcuts. They are unfair and will come back to haunt you. Something that is followed up on during the rest of the movie. The intro sequence looks great. It sets up two things: the story of Astria and the new golden suit.

Now the rock that grants wishes, when somebody makes a wish, they also lose something. It is than revealed that this rock was present during events in history where societies collapsed (the Mayans,, the last emperor of Western Roman empire, etc….)Its linked to the Gods and Diana says that each God has their own way of doing things and that this belongs to the God of lies and deception.

The things that stood out were that in the end, the villains aren\”t dead. In almost every comic book movie, the villain has to die. Here they didn\”t do that. Which is an improvement i guess.

The other thing that stood out was the use of the trope of a shy, clumsy character becomes empowered by something and turns villain. This has been a annoying trope to say the least that people who aren\”t popular, who shy, will become villains if they somehow get any kind of power. Its been done to death, similar to the theme be carefull what you wish for. It’s been done to death and they don’t add anything new to it or do anything different with it.

I\”m not a fan of Wonder Woman comics, so i was surprised to see that she could fly. That was a surprise right there for me. I knew she could leap and jump to great heights, but not that she could fly. I’m a fan of the first film, even though that was flawed. Especially the end. There is a similar spectacle feeling to this film as well.

In a good way, this movie gives us a hero, who is more human than most. Even though she isn’t really human. It also shows us a woman who acts a woman without being cliche. Which is hard to do for Hollywood. She gives in to the wish and gets Steve back, but he is not fully back. He\”s stuck inside someone else\” body. Sure, we don\”t get to see her in action that much, but thats ok. That means when she puts on the outfit and battles Cheetah or Maxwel, it means something, you\”re invested and looking forward to it.

What didn\”t work for me, was the story of Steve. In the beginning, when she got him back, she was happy. Just giving her wish up at the end, the emotional payoff didn\”t came for me. It didn\”t had the same impact. The whole flight sequence is a bit strange. I reckon that they were showing that she could fly, but still, something was off here.

Overall, I loved the movie. It was a great addition to the DCEU. I will certainly buy it when it comes out on dvd or blue ray. Its not a perfect movie, a bit flawed. There weren\”t any compelling movie villains. Which is a problem for many comic book movies. If you have a compelling villain, you have a great movie.

The music was also on point. I love Hans Zimmer. Towards the end you hear the cue from Batman Vs Superman coming on and it put a smile on my face. I thought he was done with superhero movies, but i guess he found a second breath and went back to it.
