I just watched Promising Young Woman. Its a bit marketed as a revenge film like I Spit on Your Grave trilogy, but its different. We follow in this film a young woman Cassie, a woman on a path to teach predatory men a lesson. This lifestyle clashes with her lovelife when she falls in love with someone. Just when you thought you had it figured out how this film would end, they pulled the rug from under you.
At times its usnettling and dark. We see a character on a mission to seek revenge and is not affraid to hurt people to get it. She doesn’t do anything like the women in I Spit on Your Grave trilogy. Cassie is wonderfully played here by the actress who shows almost no emotion, but at the same time carries a burdern from something that happened in her past. She is good at luring men with bad intentions towards women who are drunk, by acting drunk but not being drunk. She pulls it off in my opinion. When she feels the time is right, she switches from acting drunk to being herself again and the man in front of her will regret taking her home.
At times throughout the movie i was shocked to see what was going on. I couldn’t believe it. It isn’t gorey or violent, but its psychological. If you see it, you will probably get what im saying here.
The final 10 minutes, I couldn’t believe it. They mostly pulled it off. Its a dark ending. The film doesn’t show the rape scene, which is good. I find them really hard to watch. The movie didn’t need it. What the movie does do, is show what happens afterwards. Cassie is heartbroken by the suicide of her best friend Nina, after Nina was (gang)raped or raped while being intoxicated while one men filmed the whole thing and was tupid enough at the time to send it to numerous people.
When charges were filed, the school decided to give the boy the benefit of the doubt and not believe the victim. They don’t want to ruin the boy’s life over “alleged” accusation of rape.
For me, this is a movie i will most likely not watch again similar to Antichrist, A Serbian Film. Unlike A Serbian film, i can recommend this film to anyone.
