In monotheïstic religions angels are messengers and warriors of God. In polytheïstic traditions, their roles are different. While angeloi are meee messengers, certain Daimones could also function like that. Hesiod stated that the spirits of the first 4 ages of mankind were turned into Daimones by the Gods. Plato thought that Daimones could either be good or bad but they did influence peoples lives and their fate. This view is more prevalent in Roman polytheism than anywhere else where Romans worshipped the Dii Penates and/or Genii/Juno of their household. Basically they are household gods who had huge influence on the lives and fates of the Romans. The Hellenes did not had such view on household gods. That came later .But it’s unclear  wether or not this was something just for philosophy or people actually believed it as well. Plato was accused by brining in new gods but I doubt it was meant to be taken literally. In polytheistic societies, brining in new gods wouldn’t cause much problems unless they disturbed the status quo like the cults of Bacchus and Kybele did in Roman society that they were temporarily outlawed. 

What these spirits were, they acted as intermediaries between the realm of mortals and the divine. They looked human but they weren’t. 

I think that I also encountered a similar being twice the last year. Once at home, the second time while I was away from home. While I did feel troubled by its presence. I only saw a dark shape in the form a human, I wasn’t scared. Admittedly I did feel a bit freaked out by it. Which is normal if you encounter such a being. 

I think the message they were trying to send me is to become more active religiously and I did. But the real message: I have no real idea. I can come up with theories as to why it showed up but that’s about it. I have no clear idea whether or not it was a Daimone or a angelos that visited me. Maybe I will never know. I will not try to summon it. I’m not that stupid.
