She-Hulk: a review

I’m no die hard marvel fan, so I don’t know the character at all. When the series was announced, I was like “meh”. A legal comedy show that breaks the 4th wall. Not something that would interest me.

After it was announced that Daredevil would show up, it peaked my interest.

Needless to say, the show didn’t impress me at all. The characters were somewhat interesting but the story: I thought it was boring. I couldn’t connect with the show. The humor didn’t land as well as it should. The future connections or connections with current shows or movies were not good enough for me. I was not entertained at all.

The online hate group that targeted She-Hulk. I see it online enough how women are targeted by far right extremists or Incels. But the storyline was derivative and boring to me. I felt that they could have done it better. But with less than 10 episodes it was not easy to balance all storylines.

I think the problem lies that the heavy overuse of comedy in their movies and tv shows. In a show about rampant sexism and how female superheroes are addressed, the overuse of comedy limited the impact of the story it was trying to tell. For me, because of this, I couldn’t enjoy the show.

Overall I would describe the show as “meh”.

If you want to address sexism in society and how women deal with it, I think comedy is not the right genre for it. Unless it was done right, than you hear no complaints from me. But that’s not the case here in my opinion. I wish it was.
