This is my blog where I write stuff that interest me: religion, politics etc…

glue of society

on twitter I saw a tweet that stated that religion is the glue that binds society together and that atheism is the acid that tears it apart.

This statement says that one should view atheists as troublesome, dangerous to society. While it is true that religion binds people together and can be a potentiel glue for society, but to state that atheism is the acid that tears this glue apart. This is false. By stating this, you are tearing apart society where people don’t feel religious are being left out because it. It sows division in society. In a time where people are being discriminated against for their sexuality, gender, religion, are we going to add lack of religion to the list?

No. That’s my answer. We shouldn’t do that. Discrimination on the basis of their faith, gender, sexuality, skin colour or lack of faith is bad no matter what argument you come up.

What glues people together is solidarity. We are all human and that binds us together no matter who or what we worship or don’t worship. If we allow religion to be the only glue that binds society together, we run at risk to become a theocracy and history teaches us that this always ends up bad. No, religion can’t be the only glue to hold society together. It should be solidarity among people all over the world regardless of class, skin colour, gender, sexuality or religion, or lack thereof. Women’s rights will disapear when religion will be the only glue that holds our society, our civilisation together.

If we allow religion to be the sole glue, who will define which religion can be the glue? Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, etc…? That means that no matter what, people will be excluded. That is something we should avoid at all costs. We have seen enough examples to know that this will never work out. We run at risk coming across people who seek to use their religion to influence and dominate others= theocracy. Saudia-Arabia, Afghanistan, Iran, UAE, USA (is on its way to become one). Do we want that? I know i don’t want such a thing. Maybe its the marxist in my talking, but I prefer to be solidair with all people on this planet, regardless their religious beliefs or lack thereoff. We have bigger fish to fry at the moment: clime change: class struggle, rise of fascism in the west. We need to unite to face these threats or we run at risk of the 21st century being the last century of mankind.
