In the picture you see in the front, a statue of Hekate, but i did not have one of Thanatos so i had to do one without a statue of Him. Since this was the first night of Katachtonia, the festival of Those Beneath the Earth, i thought i would blog about the experiences i had during the ritual. For the first night, the ritual went as following:
light the candles and let them extinguish. Preferably all black candles, to honour Hekate and Thanatos. Recite hymns: Orphic and/or Homeric. Offer incense and libations to Them. Visit a cemetery and reminisce about the people in your life whom you have lost and were taken in the arms of Thanatos or the ones who died during the world wars or recent wars. Recite a prayer, meditate, perhaps using the epithets, names of the Gods. Conclude it by offering libation of water into the soil.
I did do that. While I did not let the candles extinguish on their own, because of fire safety. I did start with a opening prayer to Hekate Aidonia and Thanatos. I did not find any black candles, so i did it with grey candles. I used dragonblood incense to offer to these Gods. I read Orphic hymns to Them as there aren’t any Homeric hymns to them. I poured libation of water into the soil near the cemetery as i remembered the dead, my mother, those who died during wars, of natural causes, manmade causes. I also wanted to do this festival as a way to process my grief and my mourning. I prayed to Plouton Hagisilaos and Persephone Hagisilao, ok She doesn’t have this title but I felt it could apply to Her as well as leader of the people of the Underworld even id it was wrong spelling. It was a spur of the moment kind of thing. I walked around the cemetery meditating. I felt at ease, peaceful, relaxed. There were other people at the cemetery, mostly people walking from the street to the other side where they can continue walking near the river because its located near the river banks. That is why there were joggers there. Some people with their pets passing through. An elderly couple sitting on the bench near the entrance as i saw them as i passed by.
If i have any funky dreams, I think I wouldn’t have to look very far for why that is. lol. Anyway, that is all for the first night.
