Since in the invasion of Ukraine by Russia and the war/genocide in Gaza, wee see that the world is turning back to cold war tactics with two fronts: west and east. This isn’t new. The last 3000 years Rome, Hellas were at one point at war with eastern empires. The Graeco-Persian wars are most notable and known, mostly because of the movies 300 and 300: Rise of an Empire. After those wars, Alexander the great conquered the Persian empire and stretched his empire all the way to Bactria and India. Rome had also problems with eastern kingdoms who caused them headaches.
After the 1st world war, the USSR was a cause of concern for the west, as in there was a first true socialist country in the world that didn’t follow the capitalistic system and kicked the capitalists out and actively tried to install socialists governments elsewhere in the world. Which lead to the cold war after the second world war.
When the USSR collapsed, it was the end of the cold war. As we thought. It turns out, the cold war is back, this time with not just Russia but also with China.
How we got here?
Well that is a long story really. The pandemic send shock waves throughout the world, putting pressure on the current economic system. A system not designed to withstand crisis’s and shocks. When it encounters shocks and crisis is created because of it. Which is ironic because as long as capitalism existed, it has had crises. Those are created because of the flawed system. In a quest for more riches, more wealth, they produce more than what they need in a bid to out maneuver their competitors This usually also means lowering of wages so that they can keep up with production costs. This creates a host of problems like people having hard time been able to feed and clothe themselves among other things.
China was once the place where technological products were made and sold for profit in the west because the wages were lower there. China learned from it and started using it against the west to out maneuver them and they did. The west being threatened by China’s success since 2010, started to flex their muscles by spreading their influences, just like the west did but differently. They didn’t force governments out or installed dictators. Does that mean, that China is perfect? No, it isn’t.
Are they better than western governments? Yes, but honestly the bar is so low that anyone can step over it with ease.
When Russia invaded Ukraine, it did so for various reasons, but the main reason given was BS. It wasn’t to root out fascists in Kyiv because if that was the reason, it would attack all other countries in the world. There are fascists in every western country, including Ukraine and Russia. In Russia, they are only tolerated so long as they go along with the narrative set out by Putin. If they step out of line, they get kicked out. So no, that argument holds no real merit. The real reasons are the expansion of NATO towards the east, control over the Ukrainian resources like wheat and minerals. It is also the reason why the west wants it. Whoever controls the wheat production in Ukraine, can control the price of wheat in the world. If Ukraine is more Russian favored, it goes into the pockets of Putin’s rich capitalists friends. If Ukraine is more western favored, it goes into the pockets of the western capitalists. Neither of the profits goes back to the country or the people who produce it.
The support Ukraine gets, will result that the country will have to pay it all back. The money, the weapons, they didn’t get it for free. If Ukraine wins, it will mean that wages will be lower than what they are now. Western capitalists companies will take over. Unions are made illegal. So there is no real way for people to organize themselves so that they can fight back against the lowering of wages. The deal for a cease fire by Trump does nothing good for Ukraine. If what is true what was leaked, it will mean that hostilities are stopped, Russia can keep their gains. Ukraine will hold elections, give US the rare Earth minerals. With Russia having the momentum on the battlefield, there is no real incentive for them to join the negotiation table. When Ukraine had the momentum last year, it could have forced Russia to the negotiation table but they didn’t do that. Most likely whispered by USA and European countries to keep fighting. To keep fighting means only more lives lost, maimed and destroyed by the war on both sides. I have not verified this, but I heard that Ukrainian parliament voted last year a law that stated that any negotiations with Russia are deemed illegal. If this is true, it would mean that any ceasefire deal by US between Ukraine and Russia would be deemed null and void.
Prepare for war
The war is still going in Ukraine and the western countries are preparing for war… with Russia. Russia doesn’t have the manpower to attack other countries. But that doesn’t hold the western countries back from installing fear for a new war with Russia. Old ghosts are return with a new cold war with Russia and China. Is Russia a real threat? No, at the moment it isn’t. It doesn’t have the resources or manpower to wage a multiyear war against many countries. I’m not a fan of Putin, but I can’t see Putin trying to overextend his hand by waging war against numerous countries while his army has problems gaining new ground without the support of North-Korean soldiers. Putin can hold back the other western countries back with the threat of using nuclear missiles. Western countries know this, so they wage a different kind of war against Russia and China, an economic one. Only one problem. Both China and Russia are part of BRICS which was created to counter IMF and western influences after the financial crisis in 2008 and is expanding with more countries joining the organisation. Fact that only western countries issued economic sanctions against Russia and the rest of the world didn’t, shows that the south has had enough of the hypocrisy of western countries. Especially with how Israel is treated, the difference in attitude couldn’t be any bigger. At the moment, I don’t see how Russia is military any threat to us in the west. Except that Kremlin support far right groups in wester countries and we know that they backed financially Marie Le Pen, Flemish Vlaams Belang among others and with the support of Elon Musk, those fascists will continue to grow unless the left can organise itself and form a international block to counter the rise of the fascists in Europe. Some fascists are openly pro-Putin. The irony being that those who are anti-war are also put in the same camp as Putin lovers, while they didn’t have any love for him.
Still in the media we ae being bombarded with messages for to prepare for war, that Russia is a real threat to the west. On social media, people are told to prep for war. The narrative is clear: prepare for war, because the military industrial complex smelled cash and they want more, so if the Ukraine conflict could end this year (if that is possible without Ukraine losing ground) it would mean that MIC (military industrial complex) could produce fewer weapons. At the moment, they can’t keep it up with the demand because of the Israeli and Ukrainian conflicts. War only serves the rich, not the ordinary people. We need to counter the narrative that we need to prepare for war. We don’t need more war, more weapons. We need more peace. Not war. No more imperialism for capitalists countries. Capitalists push for more war because they want to produce and sell more weapons. The fact that people’s lives will be destroyed because of it, holds little value for the capitalist. All they care about is more profit. Capitalists will use fascists to that end, if they feel that they can serve their purpose. They did that in the 20’s and 30’s of the 20th century and we all know what happened then. It looks like we are going for a repeat.
For those who need a history lesson. The first people who went into the concentration camps were social democrats, communists, union people, political opponents, later they were joined by gays, gypsies, and than Jews. Social and worker rights were disbanded.
So we need to really ask ourselves the question: do we need more war?
My answer is no. We don’t need it. Not because we would look weak or something, because it clearly serves one purpose; to make rich people richer. Nationalism serves a means to an end there. Like i said earlier:in wars, its ordinary people who do the fighting and dying. Families are torn apart and those who come back are never the same again. Not to mention the devastation caused by war is something to hold into account. It is not for nothing that they call it “horror of war” because real war is true horror. People dying, coming back maimed, psychological destroyed. If we can avoid war through diplomacy, its better to do that than go to war. But diplomacy doesn’t make anyone rich, especially the companies that manufactor weapons.
