Blood of Zeus Season 3 review (spoiler warning)

last week Netflix dropped the third season of the show Blood of Zeus and it immediatly followed the events of the final of season 2 where Typhon was released by Gaia. It is clear that the writers drew their material directly from the Gigantomachia where Gaia was the instigator and first released Typhon to go after Zeus before sending the Giants. What we see here is a direct followup of the Gigantomachia.

Gaia reasoning seems similar to the ones she had before the Gigantomachia. She was disappointed in the Olympians and especially Zeus when she started the Gigantomachia and here she started the war again because she was disappointed in the Olympians when vying for the throne of Zeus. Where in season 2 the star was Hades who was fleshed out and became likeable, here the focus lies on the brothers Seraphim and Heron but also on Kronos.

There is still some animosity between the brothers as they have a hard time working together to stop Typhon and Kronos from destroying the world. Seraphim backstory is season 2 became more sadder when he has lost everything and turned towards the darkness due to his anger towards the world and the Gods. He was heartbroken when he found out that his beloved priestess died and was stranded on the banks of the river Styx. He vowed to help her and here he has the opportunity to do just that but she became a pawn in Kronos’ chessplay. Seraphim was right not trusting Hera with her olive branch as Hera and the Olympians needed them, but they needed the Olympians as well if they wanted to have any chance to defeat Kronos and Typhon.

Zeus returns, first as spirit. Than as God again. I thought it was weird that Gods has souls that go to the Underworld after they died. Ares tried to redeem himself when faced with Typhon as he wanted to undo his shame from the previous war where he and the others fled to Egypt when Typhon came for them and only Zeus stayed behind to face the monster. In the end, Ares died as did Hephaestos as he tried to save Aphrodite mourning over Ares, showing clearly that Hephaestos still loved Aphrodite even though she chose Ares over him. When Kronos threw both of them in the Abyss with Hades watching in horror, it was game over for them as for Persephone. The Abyss wiped their souls out from existence, eliminating any hope of coming back from it. Kronos showing his cruelty again like in the myths where he has no issues killing family members or wiping them out. All these efforts were in vain because none of them revealed where Zeus’ soul was.

Storywise, it was pretty condensed as the story was driving foward by the actions of the characters and their motivations. Some of the Gods and Titans are merely shown and rarely get any real screentime. Which is a shame, really. With 8 episodes of a runtime of 24 minutes, there is so much you can do with all these characters and choices has to be made. Whereas in season 2 the story was more characterdriven, here it was purely story driven. To me it was clear that the writers knew what they wanted to do from the start, since they had a 5 year plan in mind when they started with Blood of Zeus. Appearently Netflix usually cancels the show after season 3 like they usually do after 3 seasons. I liked that they focussed on Kronos, Hades, Seraphim and Heron. I wonder what could have been if they had the time to finish their story properly? We still got a magnificent season 3 where they finished the story nicely up. Like Chuck said in Supernatural, endings are hard. And here it is no different. But Blood of Zeus delivers. Alfred Molina stands out as Kronos, the King of the Titans.Alfred Molina brigns Kronos to life and its clear from the start that he is not someone to mess around with.He is powerful, cruel. All what can be expected from Kronos. The actors who play Seraphim, Hades and Heron do also very good work to bring their characters to life. I like the conclusion of the story of Heron and Seraphim. They are reunited with their mother where Seraphim as for her forgiveness for accidently killing her. Heron felt throughout the season that his life was ending and indeed it was, orchestrated by Demeter out of spite for the loss of Persephone. When she offered him the thread that can be resown, he refuses and decided the let the chips land as they fall. He knew that he wasn’t going to survive this and he made his piece with it. He has grown alot since the first season, so did Seraphim.

All in all, if you are fan of Greek mythology do certainly watch all 3 seasons of Blood of Zeus. You won’t be disappointed to say the least. In another post, i will go into details of the myhtology behind Blood of Zeus storylines.
