Yes. Proponents of capitalism will disagree with me and that is their right to. They will claim that capitalists create wealth and jobs. That is certainly true. The thing is that capitalists will try everything to hoard that wealth for themselves. Hence we have so many billionaires and perhaps even soon trillionairs like Musk. That alone proves that capitalism only creates wealth for the wealthy and leeches of the work of those who work for them and at the same time trying to lower the wages of their workers so that they could have more money.
Unlimited Growth in a Finite World
If we continue the put profits first, we will destroy ourselves in the process. Capitalism went from crisis to crisis because capitalism seeks unlimited growth in a finite system like our planet.
That is not possible nor sustainable. What capitalists want is pure exploitation of their workforce. In the 19th century they had the church to back them up and help them convince the populace that they needed to accept their fate and their suffering. Its one of the reasons why Marx was against religion . They knew that organised religion like the church was tied to the power of the elites and they decided to cut that line. Now, seeing how people don’t want that kind of life of suffering, they want something better. They want a better life and a better future.
Putting People Before Profit
If we put people first, we can strive to become better, to not be predatory and create a better future for future generations. Right now, that future is rather bleak: wars, economic misery, climate change. Under capitalism i don’t see our species surviving the next centuries, let alone the next millennia. I do think that the future of our species is in space, but if we need to build colonies on the moon and other planets, we can’t rely on capitalistic economy to do it. In a way even Gene Roddenberry understood that when he created Star trek.
Hypercapitalism and Corporate Power
Capitalism did provide great strides in medicine, science, but the hypercapitalism we have now, is in its final stages and seem to be on life support here. Companies create work for people, but its the workforce who create the wealth. Employers need employees as much as employees need employers. It should be a symbiotic relationship, but it rarely is like that. It usually is a parasitic relationship. You see that with companies like amazon, Apple, tesla, etc…Board of directors, investors want their money and they want more and more. Lets say that one company makes 1 million dollars profit in 1 year. Under the current capitalism, the next year it needs to be double or they didn’t made any profit at all. That is what i meant that unlimited growth is impossible.
Overproduction and Waste
Same goes for the production. In order to compete, they produce more so that they can drive their competitors out of business. What happens with the surplus being made? Its either stocked or in the case of food, thrown away. This system creates enormous waste while millions of people still struggle to meet basic needs.
Wealth, Power, and Political Influence
Modern capitalism is desperately trying to preserve itself, and in doing so it often aligns with powerful political interests. This is one reason why sections of the elite supported Donald Trump.
I do not consider Trump a fascist in the strict historical sense, although he frequently uses rhetoric associated with authoritarian leaders such as Vladimir Putin. Trump has shown authoritarian tendencies, and some figures surrounding him, such as Stephen Miller, are associated with more extreme ideological positions.
The existence of so many billionaires itself reflects the unequal distribution of wealth. Defenders of the system often argue that these individuals simply took risks. While that is partially true, those risks were frequently softened through tax loopholes, government support, financial connections, and wealthy family backgrounds. Figures such as Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk benefited from advantages unavailable to most ordinary people.
Corporate Influence Over Governments
This raises an important question: how does it benefit humanity when most wealth is concentrated in the hands of a small global elite? Wealthy individuals and corporations use their resources to shape policies in their favor.
Trade agreements such as North American Free Trade Agreement and the proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership were criticized because they would have allowed corporations to challenge national laws if those laws threatened corporate profits. Many feared this would weaken democracy by giving corporations greater influence over public policy.
Governments increasingly appear vulnerable to lobbying, corporate pressure, and political financing. Elites will often use any available means, including alliances with authoritarian movements, to protect their interests.
The Cost of Living Crisis and Declining Birth Rates
Another symptom of hypercapitalism is the rising cost of living. Food, energy, housing, and education continue to become more expensive, while societies move from one crisis to another.
This creates an environment in which many people question whether they should even raise children. As a result, birth rates are declining across much of the developed world. Migration may provide temporary relief, but long-term planning is often neglected by politicians.
Capitalism neither solves nor prioritizes this issue because profit remains the central objective. In such a system, healthy, educated, and fulfilled people are not always seen as valuable unless they are continuously producing and consuming. Childcare, education, housing, and healthcare all come with increasing financial burdens. When wages stagnate while costs rise, having children becomes economically unrealistic for many families.
Historical Parallels and Women’s Rights
Of course, the issue is more complex than economics alone. Urbanization and changing social structures also contribute to declining birth rates. Even the Fall of the Western Roman Empire faced demographic challenges during its later centuries.
Removing women’s rights does not solve these problems. On the contrary, it worsens them by reducing personal freedom and social stability.
Alternatives to Capitalism
Many people believe capitalism is the only viable system simply because it still dominates much of the world. However, other political and economic systems continue to exist in countries such as China, Vietnam, Cuba, and North Korea.
In the case of North Korea, some argue that its survival was influenced partly by geopolitical calculations and the limited strategic value of its natural resources compared to other regions.
