This is my blog where I write stuff that interest me: religion, politics etc…

why don't Gods talk to us like people do?

Chris Aldridge asks a good question here. How come the Gods don’t directly talk to us. Its one of the questions most people will ask why the divine doesn’t talk to us directly. While the divine does talk to certain people directly, but for most people, the Gods will talk indirectly to us.

I think the reason why the divine doesn’t talk to us directly lies in the fact that the Gods are not humans. A God talking directly to a human is like a human talking to an ant. I’m not saying that ants view us as gods, but that for an ant, a human talking to it will mean that the ant will not understand what the human is saying. A good example in fiction is in the tv show Supernatural when angels are introduced. When they talk directly to humans, humans are suffering. Only a few can withstand and understand what they are saying. The same goes for Gods directly interacting with humans. The myth of Semele show us that. In this myth Semele, pregnant with Dionysos, asks her lover: Zeus to show his true form. This was mostly because Hera influenced her in the hopes Zeus would do it and kill his lover. Zeus did do it, but killed Semele in the process.

This teaches us that the Gods can interact directly with us, but chose not to do it because they do not want to hurt us. The God Apollon interact with us through his priestess the Pythia, to teaches us the will of the Gods. Why He talks in riddles is a good question. I think it might have to do with the transfer the will of the Gods into a human language that might be limited or He uses riddles as to not interfere with the fates of humans? The story of Kroissos shows us that. The king asks every oracle what will happen if he attacks Cyrus 1 of Persian empire. The Delphian oracle stated that if he crossed the river a empire will fall. The king thought that it meant that if he crosses the river, Cyrus 1 will be defeated and attacked King Cyrus 1 and lost. If the oracle stated that if he attacked Cyrus 1, he would lose, the attack would not have happened. When talking in riddles, its up the person reading or hearing it what it means, so if he or she comes to the wrong conclusion. Its his own fault that he misunderstood the Pythian oracle. In this, the destiny of people is not changed by divine intervention. While Gods are powerful, their realms are limited in the way that they limit their own power to avoid divine conflicts with their fellow Gods’ domains. The Moirai are older than the Olympian Gods. Zeus as Moiragetes is the leader of the Moirai, but even He does not dare to cross them. Its unwise for the Gods to interfere in the domains of other Gods. This results usually in direct conflict with them. The biggest inter divine conflict was between the Titans and Olympian Gods and later between the Giants and the Olympian Gods called Titanomachia and Gigantomachia.

Those conflicts reshaped the world. So going back on topic. Why the Gods don’t talk with us directly? The Gods talk with us indirectly to not just protect us from their real form and voice. it might be frustrating that we must interpret their communication, but its better this way than to end up obliterated. I have received signs from the Gods over the years. I have talked about the latest signal I received from them on this blog. I get its frustrated. But it helps us to think about it and come up with own interpretation even If it turns out wrong, but that is how we will learn. If we don’t make mistake, we can’t evolve.

Finally, I’d say it’s possible that the Gods don’t usually come to us on our level because, unlike our friends and family, we are not their equals, nor do the Gods exist for our purposes. They answer our prayers, protect us, give us blessings and advice, and keep order in the universe, but they’re not our coworkers or office party. Their positions are extremely sacred, royal, and hold responsibilities that we could not even begin to fathom. I delight in the simple fact that the Gods like, love and are intrigued enough by humans to give us as much of their blessings as possible.
